Bachelor of Science, Geology, 1974 Westminster College

Shortly after graduation in 1969 I married my high school sweet heart, Claudia Bischoff. We have had 50 years together and I would have to say it was the best decision that I have ever made. As you recall, the war in Viet Nam was in the fore front of our minds and I wasn't thrilled with the thought of getting drafted so I joined the Utah National Guard 140th Field Artillary from 1969-1975. I had an older brother who joined the Marine Corps at age 17 and was "killed in action" near Da Nang, South Viet Nam in July of 66 so I was a little leary of following in his foot steps. In the National Guard I was a ballistic meteorologist. We sent up weather balloons to check for wind direction, wind speed, barometric pressure which was kind of important because we wanted the Artillary shooting off the 155mm howitzers at the bad guys instead of the good guys. I did my basic training at Ft Campbell, Kentucky. As I was laying in my bunk late one night I came to the realization, I need to get an education. I didn't ever study at South High, and I mean never. I was just interested in playing sports and chasing girls. I loved South High (and still do) but the education part was not at all important.
After I returned from the Army I attended Westminster College with the help of a football scholarship and help from my dear wife. I ended up playing football 3 years, baseball 2 years until they dropped the program. I even got to play a little basketball. (That is an interesting story) I loved Westminster College. In fact, if I was retired I would like to go back to school and get an additional degree. (I know I'm crazy). It was there that I developed a love of learning.
In my working career I've basically just had two jobs. For thirteen years I sold construction, industrial and mining equipment throughout the intermountain west.
My next career change was when I switched to the insurance business. I've worked for Allstate Insurance as a Sales Manager and as an agent for the past 31 years.

I would have to say that life has been good to me and that I have been blessed greater that my wildest expectations, and much better than I deserve.

School Story:

I remember school dances and dinner afterwards at the
Heidleberg and the Della Fontana.

Driving my 1960 Chevy Impala ( I could hide 4 people in the trunk and sneak them into the drive in) One night at the Woodland Drive-In with Dave Phillips, Van Covington & Bob Fratto we "forgot" to unhook the speaker from the window as we drove out after the show.

Since we are telling John Tart stories and I'm sure the statute of limitations is up by now. John called me one night and said my parents are gone, come on over and we will have some fun. ( I think we were 14 or 15). Before I know it we are dragging state street in a 1940 pick up truck that unbeknownst to me did not have any brakes. We are cruising north bound on State next to Sears and the light turns red and John slams into the back of the car in front of us. As the guy gets out of his car, Johns calmly tells the guy to turn the corner and we will assess the damages. John turns on his blinker to turn right, the guys turns right and then we speed off straight ahead as fast as the truck would go. We ditch him by pulling in someones driveway, turned off the lights and ducked down for what seemed like an eternity.
After about an hour, we drove home parked the old truck and I didn't hang out with John for quite a while after that.
What was I thinking?????????????????????
(How does hit and run & grand theft auto sound on some ones resume'? )

August football practice at Liberty Park.

My house getting toilet papered by the Pep Club? (I think)

Team meetings at a team mates house the night before a game.

Snelgoves

Armont Willardson in Acapella

Lagoon Day

Concerts at Lagoon

Gold Rush

Hanging out at DEES on 21st South (remember "Big John"
the SLC cop with the 20 inch biceps)

Two hamburgers, chocolate shake, & a cherry turnover @ DEES for $.84 cents.

Homecoming football game beating Highland 37-6

School assemblies (Dave Maher, yelling from the balcony
"Backman Sucks")

Our perfect record in basketball. (12-0 as I remember?)

The Ramps, The Circle, The Cafeteria, The Long Hallways,

A basketball game at East our Junior year when Dave Borup knocked out Steve Breeze after Dave had just fouled out of the game.

South High had a lot of cute girls.

Going to the STATE TOURNEY in baseball and playing at Derks Field.

Ice blocking at Lindsey Gardens

A basketball game our junior year at South, playing Olympus and the South Gym was packed with standing
room only. The game determined who was going to play in the state tournament. It was so loud your ears were ringing. The score was tied with about 10 seconds to go in the game and Johnnie Noble made a basket with one second to go to win the game.

School Plays "Music Man" "Oklahoma" "Funny Girl"

Going to Hires after football practice with Dave Updegraph & Steve Harper.

The Einar Nielson Field House at the U of U playing in the State Basketball Tournament

Coach Souvall going ballistic in the locker room (throwing the Pep Club cake into the lockers, putting his fist through the chalk board, kicking a garbage can in to the showers) after we lost a game.

Cockroaches in the lunch room.

"Play to Win"

"Suck up your Guts, South" (I'm still trying to figure that one out) It is probably more applicable now than 40 years ago.

The diversity of our student body.

I'm proud to say that I graduated from SOUTH HIGH!
