Dear Cubs,
As some of you might know our fellow cub and friend Sam Woffinden came back to Salt Lake City in June of 2014 after more than 20 years in California. Because of health concerns and other factors he found it difficult to find employment and permanent housing, causing him to reside at the Road Home shelter.
I occasionally joined him for lunch and spent time with him as did Wilford Mueller who invited him to his home for Thanksgivings. In August 2015, Sam joined Kirk Denison, Wilford Mueller, Dale Barker, myself and our wives for a barbecue at Kirk’s home. Following the barbecue Sam dropped out of site.
It wasn't until October 2016, when Dale Barker hired a private detective, that we discovered that following our time together Sam had entered a care facility and probably due to complications of a leg infection passed away on September 25, 2015, 5 weeks after we had been together.
Despite his difficulty he always managed to be cheerful and optimistic.
On October 20, 2016, Kirk, Dale, and I joined Sam’s sister, a nephew and 2 nieces for a graveside service to bury Sam’s cremains at his family plot. All of us laughed as we spoke of many good times we had spent with Sam. Additionally, Kirk read a tender eulogy written by Wilford who is in Hawaii on a mission for the LDS church.
It is our hope that the Lord shows his tender mercies upon Sam.
Sincerely,
Don Catmull

Sam was so lucky to have great friends like Don, Wilford, Dale and Kirk. Although I didn't know him well, I just remember him as a very nice guy in high school.I knew his sister Nancy better. God bless Sam,his sister and family and his wonderful friends!
